Golf holiday in Austria

Golf holiday in Austria is a short golf blog post highlighting some of the best courses to play.

I am talking about Austria… not Australia and don’t mention the Sound of Music, they’ve never heard of it.

When flying to Austria there are several airports that are suitable including, Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Linz & Innsbruck.
A little insider tip… try Bratislava airport as it is only 45 minutes to Vienna and can be a little cheaper too.

After living and working in Austria for over 13 years I have a great knowledge of the golf courses, hotels & restaurants.
I have had the privilege of living and working in both Seefeld in Tirol & Vienna (The capital of Austria).
So if you are looking for something a little different for your next golf trip, then read on.

Most golf courses in Austria have good practice facilities. Do be aware of the fees that they charge for the use of these facilities. You will typically pay around 10 euros just to use the driving range (No balls included). Range balls will be approx. 5 euros.

Golf Courses that are within reach of the following airports/areas.

Golf Courses in the Vienna Area
Fontana Golf Club

Now re-opened after a major design change. The greens here are as good as any in Europe.

Diamond Country Club

The home of the Austrian Open on the European Tour. Great facilities with both the clubhouse and the boathouse where the food and views across the course are excellent.

Schloss Ebreichsdorf

A wonderful golf course that offers something for everyone. Great greens and a good design. Also stages European Tour Qualifying rounds.

Colony Golf Club

This is a great golf complex. With 2 fantastic courses, East & West and a great clubhouse with excellent food.

Enzesfeld

This course feels like an English golf course. Always in good condition and very friendly staff.

Föhrenwald

The Ladies European Tour (LET) have often used this course for their tournaments. Watch out for the little furry creatures on a couple of the holes.

Adamstal

Probably the most picturesque golf course in Austria. This is an absolute gem that everyone should play when visiting this beautiful country. The food is good too.

Donnerskirchen

This is probably one of the windiest courses in Austria due to its proximity to Neuseedlersee. A real good test of golf for any level of golfer. Excellent practice facilities (Maybe I am biased as I have worked there)

Hotels in Vienna

There are a huge amount of hotels in Vienna. Some of the best ones for golfers are Sofie Apartments, Hotel Spiess & Spiess, Motel One & Hotel Sans Sauci Wien.

Restaurants in Vienna

If there is one thing in Vienna that there is no shortage of it’s restaurants. Some of my favourites include Huth Gastwirtschaft, Zum Schwarzen Kameel & my insider tips Winklers zum Posthorn & Gmoakeller.

Golf courses in the Salzburg Area
Mondsee

Another good course with a dramatic backdrop of the mountains and the lake.

Eichenheim

Often seen as one of the best, but I can’t see what the fuss is about. The design could be better but it’s always in good shape and it is a very enjoyable game.

Zell am See

Fantastic scenery and two great golf courses, Kitzsteinhorn & Schmittenhöhe, the latter being the better test of golf.

Gut Altentann

Jack Niklaus design and apart from a couple of holes it is a great golf course. It does look a little American in places.

Schloss Pichlarn

Situated in a beautiful valley between Salzburg & Graz. Schloss Pichlarn is a great place to stay and play.

Dachstein – Tauern

The course was designed by Bernhard Langer and was built in 1987. It is slowly becoming one of the leading courses in Austria.

Hotels in the Salzburg area

There are a large number of hotels in Salzburg. Some of the best for golfers are Schloss Monchstein (Salzburg), Hotel Bismarck (Bad Hofgastein) & Haidvogel Mavida (Zell am See).

Golf courses in the Innsbruck Area
Seefeld Wildmoos

I always enjoy playing here. I won my first overseas tournament on this course and I still have the trophy at home. A very friendly club with great food.

Zillertal

Another course with fantastic views. The club is very friendly and is in good condition too.

Kitzbühel Schwarzsee

Stunning scenery and a great golf course. This is a great test for most golfers. The front 9 are flat and then the back 9 you might need climbing gear.

Olympia Golf Igls

A player-friendly club where the rough hardly exists. Enjoy a relaxing game with stunning views of the mountains.

Hotels in the Innsbruck area

Some of Austria’s best hotels are in this area. Here are some of my favourites, Alpen Love (Seefeld), Rasmushof Hotel (Kitzbühel) & Hotel Kapeller (Innsbruck).

Restaurants in the Innsbruck area

I love the food in Austria, in fact, I was practically brought up on it. My favourite restaurants in this area are, Gasthof LAMM (Innsbruck), Kracherlemoos (Seefeld) & Lois Stern (Kitzbühel).

Golf courses in the Graz Area
Murtal

I always enjoy playing here. The course is in good condition and the club is very friendly.

Murstätten

A great course that meanders around the huge lake in the middle. A good test of golf. Another enjoyable golf course.

Murhof

A great golf course and is always in great condition. Home of Markus Brier (Legends Tour Player) It is also the home of the Riegler & Partner Legends Tournament – May 6th-8th 2022

Bad Waltersdorf

A very new golf course but with great facilities on offer. Very good value for money.

Gut Freiberg

Situated just outside of the City is this wonderful golf course overlooked by the Schloss Freiberg. The driving range is great and the restaurant is not bad too.

Hotels in the Graz area

There are some lovely hotels in the Graz area. Some of the best for golfers are Schlossberg Hotel (Graz), Teichwirt Hotel (Teichalm) & Golden Hill Country Chalets (St Nikolai im Sausal).

Golf courses in the Linz Area

The new home of the Austrian PGA. A very new and modern complex, shame about the rooms.

Kremstal

A 27 hole golf course that is very friendly and is also a very pleasant experience.

St Florian

A great golf course in the shadow of the Schloss Tillysburg. A very friendly club with good food.

Luftenberg

A good course that is usually in good condition. 10 of the holes include water and it can be a good test of golf.

Schloss Ernegg

This is a lovely golf course overlooked by Schloss Ernegg. A very relaxed atmosphere and great value for money. The clubhouse restaurant also serves some classic local dishes at a good price.
