How to Keep Cool on the Course

How to Keep Cool on the Course is a short golf blog post that looks at ways of staying cool during the Summer heat.

It isn’t often that the temperatures soar in the UK but when they do it tends to be too hot.
The temperatures may be too hot for lazing around, never mind playing golf.
but when you have to be on the course, here are a few tips to keep cool.

How to Keep Cool on the Course
Stay Hydrated

The number one thing to remember is to stay hydrated. You will sweat much more in the heat as your body fights to keep your core temperature down.
You may think that the more you drink the more you might need to go to the toilet but this isn’t true during hot temperatures. It is actually difficult to drink too much.
If possible, stick with still water and take small sips often. Less fizzy drinks, in general, and avoid alcohol like the plague.

Eat fruit

When you go out on the golf course, take some fruit with you.
Apples, Bananas, Pears, Plums, Apricots, Melons and Grapes to name but a few are excellent for keeping you hydrated and providing your body with good nutrition.

Summer Clothing

Even though the temperatures are high, I still see golfers wearing dark clothing. Make sure you wear White or light colours that will help reflect the sun.
If the golf course allows them, then wear shorts with short socks to help get some air to your legs.
Always wear a hat of some description. Baseball cap, Bucket hat or even a straw hat, it really doesn’t matter as long it is some protection.
Wear lightweight summer golf shoes that help your feet breathe and not heavy black leather ones. You don’t need hot feet on the golf course.

Parasol or Umbrella

I am seeing more and more that golfers are using an umbrella to help create some shade whilst out on the course.
It helps if the umbrella is white or of a light colour which will help reflect the sun’s rays.

Sun Cream

More and more people go out onto the course without sun cream or sun blockers. This is really important during the summer months especially if you have fair hair.
Even if the sun doesn’t feel hot, make sure that you are protected against it. The last thing you need is to discover that later on in life you have developed skin cancer.
Once you have finished your round and you are showered and changed, rub in some aftersun cream to help your body recover quicker.

Ventilation

If you can find one, buy a small battery-operated fan to help create a cool air current. They are cheap and fit nicely into a golf bag. Some people have them built into their baseball caps.
Failing that, use your scorecard as a fan to cool you down.

Water spray

These little sprays are really cheap and again, they can be stored easily inside your golf bag. Many companies sell them with aloe vera or other light scents.

Remember that you don’t have to be abroad on holiday to do these things.
Common sense should tell you to do most of the above, but who has that much common sense?
