Brora Golf Club

Brora Golf Club is a short golf blog post that looks at one of the best experiences a golfer can have while visiting the Highlands of Scotland.

Just twenty minutes north of Royal Dornoch, nestled along the wild edges of Kintradwell Bay, lies a piece of golfing sacred ground that feels entirely untamed.
Brora Golf Club is not merely another stop on a Highland itinerary; it is a living, breathing time capsule of pure, unadulterated links golf.

As the headquarters of the James Braid Golfing Society, Brora offers an architectural blueprint virtually unchanged since Braid laid it out in 1923.
But what sets Brora apart isn't just its pedigree—it's the sheep, cattle, the electric wires guarding the greens, and a sense that this is how golf was meant to be played.

Brora Golf Club

A History Rooted in the Sutherland Turf.

Founded in 1891, Brora began as a modest 9-hole course laid out by local enthusiasts.
As the game grew in popularity across northern Scotland, the club turned to James Braid in 1923 to expand and refine the layout into a full 18-hole links.

Braid saw the natural genius of the coastline—a gentle sweep of land framed by the North Sea on one side and the rolling Sutherland hills on the other.
His masterstroke was preserving the traditional "nine out, nine back".

Perhaps Brora’s most iconic historical quirk stems from its ancient crofting rights. To this day, local livestock roam the course freely.
To protect the pristine, bent-grass putting surfaces from hooves, the greenkeeping staff maintains subtle, single-strand electric fences around every green.
Crossing those wires (and stepping carefully on the fairways!) is a rite of passage that connects modern golfers straight back to the 19th century.

Playing the Course: Strategic Links at its Finest.

Measuring 6,211 yards from the back tees against a par of 70, Brora looks manageable on paper.
On the ground, with a Highland breeze sweeping off the Moray Firth, it is a brilliant test of ball-striking, turf control, and green-reading.

Highlights of the Links
  • The Opening Test (Hole 1 - "Robin", 297 Yards): A gentle short par-4 on paper, but a blind tee shot, ideally, down the left side to avoid early trouble.
  • The Danger at the Burn (Hole 5 - "Burn", 416 Yards): A classic Braid par-4 where the burn cuts across the fairway right in the landing zone, testing your decision-making off the tee.

  • The "Sea Hole" (Hole 9 - "Tarbat", 162 Yards): The turn brings you to Brora’s signature par-3.
Tucked directly against the beach, the ocean spray is often felt on the tee. Club selection here can range from an 8-iron to a 3-wood depending on the wind.
  • The Home Stretch (Hole 18 - "Home", 201 Yards): Brora finishes with a formidable, uphill par-3 playing directly toward the clubhouse windows.
Hit short, and the steep slope will send your ball trickling 30 yards back down the fairway.

Why Brora Belongs on Your Highland Itinerary

Five-time Open Champion Peter Thomson called Brora one of his absolute favourite links courses in the world, admiring how golfers share the landscape with nature. It doesn't rely on artificial manicuring or modern bloat; it relies on natural contours, ocean winds, and raw strategy.

For anyone travelling through Northern Scotland, pairing Brora alongside Royal Dornoch and Golspie offers one of the finest, most authentic swings in all of golf.
