Golfers with Golfing Names is a short golf blog post that looks at some of the most apt names in the world of golf.

It is a rare but delightful occurrence when a golfer’s name sounds like it was destiny for them to pick up a club.

Beyond the obvious legends, there are several professionals whose names are a play on words for everything in golf.

Here is a unique, detailed list of professional golfers with names that relate to the game:

The “Perfect Score” Club

These players carry names that every golfer hopes to see on their scorecard.

  • Birdie Kim: A South Korean professional golfer (born Kim Ju-yun) who famously won the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open.
  • Chip Beck: A three-time Ryder Cup player and one of the few golfers to shoot a 59 in a PGA Tour event.
  • Gary Player: The Black Knight’s surname needs no explanation.
  • Harry Vardon: A legend of the game who developed the Overlapping Grip Technique, the Vardon Grip.

Course Features and Terrain

Names that describe the very land the game is played upon.

  • Gary Woodland: The 2019 U.S. Open champion, whose surname is a nod to the trees that frame many classic courses.
  • Daniel Field: A PGA professional based in the UK, whose name reflects the wide-open spaces of the links.
  • Ken Green: A blast from the past who has every right to be on this list.
  • Augustin Hole: A great name for a pro golfer who is listed on the PGA Tour website.
  • Dave Bunker: A Canadian golf pro and club fitter. These Sand traps can be found on every golf course.
  • Alexis Hazard: A Teaching Professional based in Texas. Every course has them.
  • Zach Lake: A Teaching Professional based in Oregon. A water hazard is found on many golf courses.
  • John Sand: 25-year-old PGA Tour Player.

Equipment and Action

These names sound like the tools of the trade or the mechanics of the swing.

  • Bob Iron: A great guy that I met in Germany at the European Coaching & Teaching Seminar.
  • Mike Shaft: A funny golf pro from Australia, whom I bumped into on a driving range in Austria.
  • Blades Brown sounds like the sharp equipment that many Golfers would love to be able to use.
  • Tiger Woods: The most iconic name in golf. “Woods” refers to both the fairway woods and an area of the course.
  • Harris English: A multiple PGA Tour winner; “English” is a common term for the side-spin or “work” put on a ball.
  • Bill Hook: Head Professional at Knickerbocker Country Club.
  • Amy Tee: New golfer and influencer on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
  • Georgia Ball: PGA Golf Professional and influencer on all Social Media Channels.
