Hole In One Statistics

29. April 2025

Previous putters of mine

Hole in One Statistics is a short golf blog post that looks at some of the numbers behind the luckiest shot in golf.

A hole-in-one occurs when a ball is hit from a tee to start a hole and finishes in the cup. The feat is also known as an ace.

My Hole-in-One Achievements

I have been playing this sport seriously for over 35 years and have achieved three hole-in-ones.

My best one came at the 1997 Harold Lees Trophy (PGA North Region) because I aced a seven-iron at the 174-yard Par 3 9th Hole (Sadly Downwind).

It was my first hole-in-one, and to play it in a PGA event was even more special.

The other 2 were played on the same Par 3 hole at GC Wien-Süssenbrunn.

The same club was used (Pitching Wedge), exactly one week separating them (Same tee time). That has to be a record of some kind due to the circumstances.

Averages

The average handicap to play a hole-in-one is 14

The average length of all hole-in-ones is 147 yards.

24 years of golfing experience is the average for men, and only 15 years of experience for women.

Percentages

60% of all golfers who play a hole-in-one are 50 years of age or above. Is that because they have more time to play?

The best brand advert ever is the fact that 45% of all hole-in-ones are played with Titleist Golf Balls.

Only 9% of us go on to have a second hole-in-one.

Numbers

Over 128,000 hole-in-ones are played each year, which is low because they say that there are approximately 545 million rounds of golf played each year.

517 yards is the longest hole-in-one that has ever been recorded. It was played on a Par 5 at Green Valley Ranch GC in Denver in 2002.

The oldest golfer to play a hole-in-one was 103.

1 in 12,500 chance of playing a hole in one because it involves more luck than skill.

67 million to 1 are the odds of playing 2 hole in ones in the same round of golf, because it is such a rare feat.

In 1868, at the Open Championship, Prestwick, one of the first recorded holes-in-one was played by Old Tom Morris.

Mancil Davies (PGA of America) has had 51 hole-in-ones during his career, which is why he is called ‘King of Hole-in-Ones’

Hal Sutton & Robert Allenby share the record on the PGA Tour due to them both scoring 10 career hole-in-ones.
