My Top 5 Scottish Links Courses

My Top 5 Scottish Links Courses is a short golf blog post that takes a look at my favourite Links courses in Scotland.

Scotland is the ancestral home of golf, and for any enthusiast, playing the historic links of the north is a pilgrimage. As a PGA Fellow Professional, I’ve had the privilege of walking these fairways many times, and while Scotland is spoiled for choice, these five stand out as the definitive "must-plays" for any serious golfer.

From the historic monuments of the game to the newest masterpieces on the coast, here are my top five Scottish links courses.

1. St Andrews (Old Course)

The "Home of Golf" needs no introduction. It is the most iconic patch of land in the sporting world. To stand on the first tee with the R&A Clubhouse behind you is an experience that transcends the game itself.

  • Course Stats: Par 72 | Length: Approx. 6,721 yards (Medal Tees)
  • What to Expect: The Old Course is famous for its massive double greens, hidden pot bunkers, and the iconic Swilcan Bridge. While it looks wide open, the strategy lies in the angles. You must navigate "Hell Bunker" on the 14th and the nerve-wracking tee shot over the hotel on the 17th (the Road Hole).
  • The Experience: The facilities at the St Andrews Links Trust are world-class, including the Himalayas putting green and the modern Golf Academy. Walking up the 18th fairway toward the town is a bucket-list moment that never gets old.

2. North Berwick (West Links)

If you want to rediscover the pure joy of golf, North Berwick is the place. It is perhaps the most fun and creative course in the world, featuring architectural quirks that have been copied by designers globally for over a century.

  • Course Stats: Par 71 | Length: Approx. 6,551 yards
  • What to Expect: Expect the unexpected. You’ll find yourself playing over ancient stone walls, navigating the original "Redan" par-3, and facing the 16th green—a "Biarritz" style green with a massive valley running through the middle.
  • The Experience: The clubhouse offers stunning views across the Firth of Forth to Bass Rock. It’s a traditional, welcoming atmosphere that perfectly complements the eccentric charm of the links.

3. Trump Turnberry (Ailsa Course)

Following its major redesign, the Ailsa Course has solidified its spot as one of the most visually spectacular courses on the planet. Situated on the Ayrshire coast, it offers a dramatic seaside route that is second to none.

  • Course Stats: Par 71 | Length: Up to 7,489 yards (Championship)
  • What to Expect: The stretch from the 9th to the 11th is breathtaking, played along the rugged cliffs with the iconic lighthouse standing guard. The redesign turned the 9th into a world-class par-3 over the ocean—it’s as challenging as it is beautiful.
  • The Experience: The resort facilities are five-star luxury. The "Halfway House" inside the lighthouse is widely considered the best in golf. It is a polished, professional, and grand experience from start to finish.

4. Carnoustie (Championship Course)

Often referred to as "Car-nasty," this is arguably the toughest test in golf. It doesn't rely on elevation changes or coastal vistas for its reputation; it relies on pure, relentless challenge and the winding Barry Burn.

  • Course Stats: Par 72 | Length: Approx. 6,941 yards
  • What to Expect: Tight fairways, deep bunkers, and a finishing stretch (16, 17, and 18) that can ruin even the best scorecard. The bunkering is masterfully placed to demand tactical excellence on every tee shot.
  • The Experience: The modern Links House provides a superb contemporary facility with indoor simulators and a fantastic restaurant overlooking the 18th green. It’s a place where you truly earn your post-round refreshments.

5. Dumbarnie Links

One of the newer additions to the Scottish landscape, Dumbarnie has quickly become a modern classic. Located just down the coast from St Andrews, it offers a premier "tourist-friendly" links experience with vast, sweeping views of the Firth of Forth.

  • Course Stats: Par 72 | Length: Variable from 5,300 to 7,600 yards
  • What to Expect: Designed by Clive Clark, Dumbarnie features wide fairways and several driveable par-4s that encourage aggressive play. However, the multi-tiered greens and strategically placed dunes ensure you still need a sharp short game. Nearly every hole offers a view of the sea.
  • The Experience: The service here is exceptional, designed to rival the best American-style club experiences. The clubhouse is perched on a high point of the property, providing a perfect vantage point for a post-round drink while watching players finish on the 18th.
