Spey Valley Golf

Spey Valley Golf is a short golf blog post that takes a look at one of the greatest hidden gems found in Scotland.

When planning a Scottish golf itinerary, the pull of the coast is undeniable. Golfers flock naturally to the iconic links of Fife, East Lothian, or the brilliant stretches up north near Dornoch and Nairn. But if you pack up your clubs and bypass the Highlands without pulling off the A9 at Aviemore, you are missing out on one of the most spectacular, sprawling modern masterpieces in the country: Spey Valley Championship Golf Course.

Designed by Dave Thomas (the mastermind behind The Belfry’s Brabazon course) and opened in 2006, Spey Valley proves that inland Scottish golf can be just as inspiring, challenging, and dramatic as its seaside cousins.

A True Highland Sanctuary

Spey Valley isn’t just a golf course; it is an immersive trek through the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. The layout meanders through ancient Caledonian pine forests, sweeps alongside the sparkling River Spey, and treats you to a towering mountain backdrop that frames almost every single tee shot.

If you catch it on the right day, you might even see the traditional steam train puffing its way past the treeline as you play. It feels entirely disconnected from the modern world—pure golfing heaven.

Playing the Monster: Notable Holes

This is a big, championship test. From the back tips, the course measures a bruising 7,118 yards (Slope 141), though five sets of tees make it highly manageable for any skill level if you select wisely. The layout challenges you with sweeping fairways surrounded by heather, fast and firm greens, and classic Dave Thomas bunkering that forces you to think about your strategy off the tee.

A few holes stand out as absolute must-mentions:

  • The 5th Hole ("The Monster"): Measuring a massive 635 yards from the back tees, this is famously one of the longest par-5 holes in Scotland. It requires real patience, three pure shots, and excellent distance control on a narrow approach to walk away with a par. Interestingly, this layout once hosted Brooks Koepka during the European Challenge Tour, where he shot a blistering, course-record 62!
  • The 6th Hole: A beautiful, nerve-wracking design that spans a natural lake. It has been adopted by a local bird colony as a nesting site, making it as scenic as it is hazardous.
  • The 16th Hole: An incredible par-3 playing over Loch Megan. Standing on the elevated tee, you have to carry a sea of vibrant purple heather and a water hazard to find a beautifully guarded green.

Pro Tips for Your Visit

Take a Buggy: While the course is beautiful to walk, the routing covers immense ground. The distance between certain greens and the next tee boxes (especially the trek from the 1st green to the 2nd tee along the river) is considerable. If you want to save your legs for the shots that matter, booking a buggy is highly recommended.

Black Tees = 7118 yards - Par 72 - 75.6 / 141

White Tees = 7017 yards - Par 72 - 75.2 / 140

Yellow Tees = 6653 yards - Par 72 - 73.5 / 136

Green tees = 5924 yards - Par 73 - 76.0 / 132

If you are coordinating a golf trip through the Highlands—perhaps connecting St Andrews up towards Castle Stuart or Royal Dornoch—Spey Valley is the ultimate inland bridge. The combination of premier modern design and untouched Highland wilderness is something you won't soon forget.
